When a potential client asked Isabelle Larignon to compose a jasmine perfume, Larignon set herself an additional challenge: to fabricate a jasmine fragrance without any actual jasmine essence. She approached this project as a game or a magic trick, crafting an olfactory illusion of jasmine from other materials—osmanthus flower, tobacco extract, several citrus fruits, Peru balsam, vanilla, and more. Every note in Bangla Yāsaman suggests a different side of jasmine’s personality, from sweet and smooth to fleshy and erotic.
As always, Larignon also devised a “scented tale” for this fragrance, with a fictional hero named Yāsaman (the Persian word for jasmine). She envisioned him as a flower vendor who offers garlands to lovers and tourists in Paris while still remembering the flower markets of his native Dhaka in Bangladesh. Long before it achieved fame in French perfumery, jasmine was native to tropical Asia, and Larignon tells this fable to remind us of perfume’s long and layered history.
