Costly spices, rare flower cuttings, precious tree resins, fine silk textiles—luxury goods of every kind, arriving from India, the Arab world, China and beyond, passed through Venice’s port in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Canali and Marzocchini pay tribute to those coveted riches and Venice itself in Philtre D’Ambre. There’s a dusky bouquet of rose for a touch of romance, a cluster of nutmeg and clove to evoke the spice trade, myrrh and other potent tree resins used in fragrance and medicine.
Wearing Philtre d’Ambre, you might imagine yourself in medieval Venice: walking the narrow cobblestoned streets between dimly lit shops and elegant palazzos, catching a breath of a nearby canal, stepping into the shadowy interiors of a church and inhaling the scents of stone and old wood, church incense and snuffed-out candles.
Amber may be a traditional and long-beloved perfumery theme, but no one has connected it to the sensory past of a specific place in quite this way before.

Philtre d’Ambre really took me by surprise. It starts with a cozy amber sweetness that’s lifted by just the right touch of salty freshness, keeping it from feeling heavy. As it settles, I get earthy resins, a hint of leather, and a green frankincense note, the style of which I’ve been loving lately. It reminds me of a few classic ambers but still feels surprisingly unique and addictive. If you’ve been thinking all ambers smell the same, this one might just change your mind.
