Costly spices, rare flower cuttings, precious tree resins, fine silk textiles—luxury goods of every kind, arriving from India, the Arab world, China and beyond, passed through Venice’s port in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Canali and Marzocchini pay tribute to those coveted riches and Venice itself in Philtre D’Ambre. There’s a dusky bouquet of rose for a touch of romance, a cluster of nutmeg and clove to evoke the spice trade, myrrh and other potent tree resins used in fragrance and medicine.

Philtre d’Ambre really took me by surprise. It starts with a cozy amber sweetness that’s lifted by just the right touch of salty freshness, keeping it from feeling heavy. As it settles, I get earthy resins, a hint of leather, and a green frankincense note, the style of which I’ve been loving lately.
